Learning in chunks is an effective way of learning Spanish. For many years, most people who studied Spanish simply devoted their time to learning new words and grammar rules ,trying to form sentences with the vocabulary and rules that had learnt.

The problem with this approach of learning vocabulary in an isolated way and grammatical rules is that you have a really high probability of making mistakes. However, by learning the structure “Me gusta ir”, you can say things such a,  “Me gusta ir al trabajo”. “Me gusta ir al cine”. “Me gusta ir con mis amigos” etc. This will help you keep your mistakes to a minimum. If we pay attention to the way children learn a language, we will see that they learn set of expressions or words first. They do not learn explicit grammatical rules deductively, then try to put them into practice. Instead, they inductively figure out models, patterns, words that go together to form grammar rules, after having absorbed the language for some time. That only happens after they have achieved quite a good level of Spanish.

I would say that learning in chunks can considerably speed up the Spanish learning process (especially during the first stages, it can make your Spanish much more solid). With a few hundred chunks, you will be able to create thousands of sentences in Spanish with almost no mistakes.

Can a language be learned just by learning it in chunks? Children learn a language this way. However, from that level on, I would say that it is necessary to follow a process similar to the one a child follows: first, he learns how to speak, then how to write and finally how to use the grammar rules.

I would say that for a standar student of Spanish learning in chunks will be really useful, especially if he learns them in an audio format that allows him to learn the pronunciation, intonation and correct voice inflection at the same time.

Nevertheless, this approach should be enhanced with some other approaches (especially at the upper-intermediate and advanced level), for example learning grammar in a more deliberate way (throughout a grammar exercises book), learning the punctuation rules, writing in a more formal way, etc.
